The following are programs CIT has developed and implemented to support our goals of community engagement, changing community norms and positive youth development.
Stop the Bleed Trainings
In partnership with Christiana Care, CIT provides training with community members on how to properly address a gunshot wound prior to medical care arriving.
Youth Sports
CIT, in partnership with the Police Athletic League (PAL), supports youth basketball and football tournaments.
Play Streets
In partnership with the Delaware Parks and Recreation, Play Streets provides safe and fun outdoor activities for youth during the summer throughout the City of Wilmington.
Respond to incidents of Violence
Within the first 24-48 hours of an incident of violence, CIT meets with the victim(s), their family and/or their social network to provide them with needed support and to discuss how to stop the cycle of violent retaliation. In 2019, there were 71 incidents that CIT leaders responded to within Wilmington.
Mediate Conflict
As a preventative and responsive measure, CIT facilitates conflict mediation to address or prevent acts of violence within the city. Conflict mediation works to engage individuals and groups involved in high-risk behavior to help them resolve disputes before it escalates into a violent incident, seeking peaceful resolutions. In 2019, there were 314 mediations between CIT leaders and street-identified individuals in Wilmington.
Youth Mentorship
In partnership with students from the University of Delaware and community members, participants are given a mentor to check in and work with throughout the year. Youth participants are employed by CIT with the job title, Mentoring, Educating, Employment and Trust (M.E.E.T). This position gives young people the ability to be paid while participating in this programing, as well as learning how to be change agents in their communities.
